Coffman Engineers Announces Hope-Amundson Merger

Coffman and Hope-Amundson Leadership

San Diego Structural Engineering Firm is now Coffman Engineers

Coffman Engineers, Inc. (“Coffman”) and San Diego-based structural engineering firm, Hope-Amundson, Inc. (“Hope-Amundson”), announced today that they have merged to become Coffman. The merger was finalized on October 27, 2017.

On August 31st, 2017, Hope-Amundson signed a letter of intent to merge with Coffman. Since that time, the firms have come to a merger agreement that aligns with Hope-Amundson’s goals to find a transition plan that works for their staff and clients, and was the right cultural fit.

"There's a lot of respect involved when putting two companies together. It's part of who we are to honor Chuck and Jim and the business they have built. […] We want to respect their clients, their staff, and their marketplace just like we are them."

David Ruff, President, Coffman Engineers

“It was obvious that both firm cultures align closely and that was something very important to us,” said Chuck Hope, Principal, Hope-Amundson.

This merger expands Coffman’s multidiscipline engineering service offerings in Southern California by adding structural engineering to Coffman’s San Diego office. Hope-Amundson’s 33 employees have joined the San Diego office which now has 40 employees and the largest structural department at Coffman. The Hope-Amundson staff will remain in their current office and eventually join Coffman’s San Diego staff in a single office location.

Hope-Amundson’s Orange County office has four structural engineers and is an important new addition to Coffman. This location strategically expands Coffman’s reach in Southern California and will eventually offer multidiscipline engineering services.

Chuck Hope and Jim Amundson from Hope-Amundson will join Coffman as principals. They join current general manager Scott Twele of Coffman’s San Diego office to support Coffman’s continued commitment to San Diego and the greater Southern California marketplace.

“The best deals are the win-win. We will strategically help Coffman with their Southern California presence and for Hope-Amundson, this allows us to join a larger firm, offer our clients more services, and look for opportunities in other areas,” said Jim Amundson, Principal, Hope-Amundson.

Dave Ruff, President of Coffman Engineers said, “There’s a lot of respect involved when putting two companies together. It’s part of who we are to honor Chuck and Jim and the business they have built. […]  We want to respect their clients, their staff, and their marketplace just like we are them.”
